A swim spot for every mood!

A photo of the water at Queechy Lake.

Columbia County is a “hot” place to be in the summer, in the figurative sense, but also literally. After visiting the shops in trendy Hudson or picking raspberries at one of the many beautiful fruit and berry orchards, you may find yourself desperate for a cool off.  Fortunately, the county also boasts an array of public swimming areas for any need.

If you have children or prefer a pool, check out Blass Memorial Park and Children’s Playground in the Town of Ancram. Further north and still want a playground for the kids? Check out Crellin Community Park in Chatham and its beautiful pond.

Rather stay close to the shops and food in Hudson? Enjoy a quick dip at Oakdale Park.

Want to live that lake life this summer? Lake Taghkanic State Park is the spot to be for lake lovers. You can even enjoy extended hours at state parks during heat waves!

Precautions

Congratulations, swimming at any of these sites makes the chances of heat exhaustion or heat stroke far less likely! However, there are still some precautions to take while lounging at a lake or pool. Here’s some advice:

  1. Know your limits. If you can’t swim, check to see if Coast Guard-approved swimming aids are allowed at a swimming location or remain in shallow water.
  1. Wear proper SPF, reapply, and bring shade. Just because you’re cool in the pool or lake does not mean you aren’t getting cooked. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
  1. Remain in designated swimming areas. If you can’t be seen, you can’t be saved.
  1. Always check the rules when arriving at a site. Most sites will have signs clearly posted. State- and municipally owned sites might also have rules posted, or a park ranger or an off-duty lifeguard available to ask.
  1. Clean up after yourself. It’s “trashy” not to.
